utility KenGen recently said that it plans to kick off the 140-MW Olkaria V geothermal project before the
end of this year.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The
new project is part of a drilling program that KenGen is running to supply
steam for more than 400 MW of capacity that is planned for development in the
next two to four years, KenGen said in a Dec. 14 statement. KenGen has drilled
137 wells since 2007, and eight rigs are in operation at the Olkaria steam
fields.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The
company said that it also is planning to build the Olkaria VI plant at 140 MW
by 2021. Geothermal sources currently account for one-third of Kenya’s
installed capacity estimated at 2,150 MW, but they provide more than half of
the energy generated due to its high energy yield and stability against weather
variations.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">KenGen
plans to add at least 3,000 MW of energy capacity to the national grid by 2018,
mostly from renewable sources, such as geothermal and wind.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In addition recently the President
of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta broke ground for the construction of the Olkaria V
power project which will produce 158 MW of electricity, strengthening his
administration’s resolve to ensure Kenya has sufficient electricity.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The President at the same time commissioned 14 wellhead
units producing a total of 75 MW of electricity. The ‘wellhead unit’ is a
unique technology developed by Kenyan engineers to harness geothermal power,
which has reduced the duration between the first drilling of a well and
installation of a geothermal plant from five years to two years.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The commissioning of the power projects is set to see more
Kenyan households access electricity. In the last four years that the Jubilee
Government has been in office, electricity connections have risen to 5.9 million
representing 63 per cent from 2.26 million which accounted for only 16 per cent
of the country’s population with access to electricity.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">“Once
again, the path is clear: we expect that the peak load will grow to about
15,000 MW by 2030; that demand will be met by raising installed capacity
gradually to 19,200 MW by 2030,” said the President

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">He said the expansion of geothermal power production will
contribute to Kenya’s prosperity. “In commissioning these wells, and in
breaking ground for the new project, we take a mighty step on the road to
prosperity for this nation,” said the President.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set
of eight internationally agreed upon development goals, are due to
expire in 2015. There is currently a lively discussion on future
development frameworks and agendas post-2015. Several actors, including
the EU, have acknowledged the significant changes and new realities in
economic and political systems since the MDGs were agreed upon in the
early 2000s.

In discussing a new development framework, the aim has been
to include more actors, especially from developing countries, and
correct the shortcomings of previous efforts. For many actors, a
significant shortcoming of the MDGs has been the lack of attention on
environmental issues and energy access. At the Rio+20 forum, Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) were promoted as a framework for bringing
together the environment and development agendas. Several actors are
currently considering whether the post-2015 agenda could entail a
merging of the MDGs and the SDGs as a new, universal development
framework.

Private sector players who also signed this document were African Development Bank (AfDB) and Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Limited. Others were the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) and Lake Turkana Wind Power Limited (LTWP).

The wind farm site, covering 40,000 acres (162km squared), is located in Loiyangalani district, Marsabit West County, in North-Eastern Kenya, approximately 50km north of South Horr township. This independent power project will comprise 365 wind turbines (each with a capacity of 850 kW), an associated, overhead electric grid collection system and a high voltage substation.

“This investment will no doubt make a big impact on the economy of Marsabit and the country at large,” said Henry Rotich, National Treasury cabinet secretary.

The Government through Ketraco will develop the necessary transmission infrastructure to evacuate the power generated to the national grid.

The legal agreements signed yesterday in respect of the PPP financing for the project amounts to 473.5 million Euros (Sh52.1 billion) and includes reimbursement and a credit agreement between Standard Chartered Bank, Ketraco and Government of Kenya.

There is also a project agreement between Ketraco and AfDB in which the former undertakes certain obligations to the fund with respect to the transmission inter-connector project.

The Lake Turkana Wind Power Project also includes upgrading of the existing road from Laisamis to the wind farm site, which is partly financed by the Dutch government and is a distance of approximately 204km.

In addition, the project will build an access road network in and around the site for construction, operations and maintenance. Ketraco, with concessional funding from the Spanish government, is constructing a double circuit 400kV, 428km transmission line to deliver LTWP electricity along with power from other future plants to the national grid.

After more than eight years of delay, contractors will from next year move to the site of the 300 MW Turkana Wind Power Project. But this will only happen after all the necessary road and railway networks needed to move turbines and other heavy equipment, are put in place.

The power produced will be bought at a fixed price by Kenya Power (KP) over a 20-year period in accordance with the signed Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

The lead arranger of the debt financing is the African Development Bank with Standard Bank and Nedbank Capital of South Africa as co-arrangers. The financing agreement was signed in March this year, clearing the way for construction of Africa’s largest wind power project.

Turkana which covers a semi-arid part of Kenya is known for drought, hunger and poverty. It also has an unusual climatic phenomenon —Lake Turkana has one of the best wind resources in the world. The project is estimated to cost 623 million Euros or Sh 75 billion and is considered the largest, single private investment in the history of Kenya.

Mr Yattani, whose county occupies 15 per cent of Kenya’s land mass said that Construction is ongoing and by the end of next year, Addis Ababa will be connected to Nairobi on tarmac road, which will change the economy of this place,

The road is expected to cost Sh46 billion and is funded by the African Development Bank, the European Union and the national government. The governor said the road would ease travel to Nairobi, which used to take four days but has since been reduced to one day.

The project has several facilities like new Petrol stations which are coming up. There are also lodges, cottages, banks and other institutions. The road will be a game changer. The project was initiated by former President Mwai Kibaki in 2007.

The Project will open competition and people are encouraged to go and create jobs to the people of Marsabit .

As part of monitoring, Laisamis MP Joseph Lekuton said he was happy with the work done on the road. Already, the Isiolo-Merille road, which is part of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (Lapsset) corridor is complete.

Construction of the remaining phases between Merille River bridge and Marsabit town, and between Marsabit and Moyale town, which is estimated to cost Sh10 billion, is going on.

The road will link Mombasa to the proposed second port in Lamu then to Ethiopia. It aims at reducing transport and shipping costs between Kenya and Ethiopia, reducing transit time for imports and exports and increasing the volume of Ethiopian goods transiting through Mombasa port.

The project will also promote trade and regional integration, increase intra-regional trade between Ethiopia and Kenya as well as with the eastern and Horn of Africa regions.

In terms of trade and regional integration, the project area extends beyond Kenya and Ethiopia to include Uganda, Tanzania, Eritrea, and Djibouti.

The planned Indian Ocean port at the small town of Bagamoyo is some 75 kilometres (45 miles) north of Tanzania's economic capital and main port Dar es Salaam.

The announcement late Monday followed the signing of deals in China, where President Jakaya Kikwete visited Sunday.

"We will do whatever is possible to ensure the project is carried out and completed, because of its great economic benefits for the entire country," Kikwete said in a statement, adding that construction would start in July.

Dar es Salaam currently handles over 90 percent of Tanzania's imports and exports totalling more than 10 million tonnes of cargo a year, according to the African Development Bank (AfDB).

But with container traffic expected to grow at more than 10 percent a year and the port already outdated and overstretched according to the AfDB, the new site at Bagamayo is key for expansion and keeping transport costs down.

Tanzania has signed deals for the port with China Merchant Holding International and Oman's State General Reserve Fund.

As well as domestic use, Bagamoyo is expected to serve landlocked regional nations including Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Malawi, Uganda and Zambia.

The project is also expected to involve a special economic zone as well as connections to Tanzania's railway network.

The port would rival Mombasa in neighboring Kenya, currently east Africa's main marine hub, as well as a planned new port at Lamu, in the northeast.

The $24 billion (18 billion euro) Lamu port project, due to be finished by 2030, includes oil pipelines to South Sudan and railways to Ethiopia and Uganda.

Tanzania's economy, which largely depends on agriculture, saw seven percent growth in gross domestic product last year, boosted by gold exports and tourism.

The government hopes large gas and coal finds will help grow the economy.
But the government is dogged by allegations of corruption, almost a third of the country lives below the poverty line and foreign aid remains vital.Project Management Todayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15733259536944712342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968168657058643758.post-6098190373033026722014-12-04T05:23:00.000-08:002014-12-08T04:52:47.105-08:00Increasing International Presence in Kenya. In February 2015 the Kenyatta International Conference Centre welcomes all international interest of the construction, infrastructure, building and energy industry.
The unit, still being tested, is now feeding 52.5MW of electricity to the national grid and marks the final phase in what is seen as a major step toward significantly lowering the cost of electricity in East Africa’s largest economy.

“On Monday we achieved a major milestone on the 280MW project when unit 5 was synchronized with the national grid. This is the last of the four 70 MW units in the 280 MW geothermal project,” KenGen CEO Albert Mugo said.

He added that final tests were ongoing to ensure system stability.
In essence, it means that we are now close to the full 280 MW even as we continue with load tests for unit 5,” Mugo said.
The Olkaria 280MW project, the largest of its kind in the world, comprises the 140 MW Olkaria IV and the Olkaria I units 4 and 5, each with a capacity of 70 MW. The official commissioning of the final phase of the 280MW geothermal power project is expected next month.

Kenya is banking on geothermal energy to provide reliable and affordable energy, critical to lowering the cost of living and doing business.Geothermal energy is being used to replace the expensive diesel-generated power as the country accelerates infrastructure expansion including a new railway and port.

Last month,President Kenyatta commissioned the 140MW Olkaria IV power plant announcing the reduction of electricity bills for Kenyans once fully connected to the national grid.Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir last week said power bills were already coming down as a result of the additional energy in the national grid.
At first, work on the elevated road was expected to start in 2013 and end in 2015, but the latest development suggest it might take longer as the exact commencement date cannot be established. The Nairobi Motorway Group, formed by a consortium of international investors led by building giant Strabag, was awarded the tender in 2009.

But the government was forced to cancel the contract after the World Bank declined to finance it on integrity issues touching on an investor in Strabag. The World Bank was also uncomfortable with the impact of the road on the environment and the level of compensation to households and businesses that were to be displaced by the project.

In particular, the Bretton Woods institution expressed concern over Strabag’s management of the contract after a Russian investor it had blacklisted bought into the project.

The Strabag-led consortium, which has since been dissolved, was to build the Uhuru Highway overpass and the Southern by-pass as part of a 30-year concession deal that included a toll road — where the contractor would collect fees for use of the lane.

Mr Njogu could not, however, disclose more information on the project that was planned over three ago years, with the World Bank previously withholding funds to a concession winner.

Source: DailyNation.co.ke

This project is expected to transfer freight from roads to rail reducing rapid roads damage, provide safe and rapid intercity passenger transport.
An overview of this project is given in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure as having commenced. The location of the project is said to be nationwide covering the infrastructure

The project progress monitoring was initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta when he officially commissioned Kenya’s first standard gauge railway in Mombasa on November 28th 2013.

Kenyans are set to enjoy considerable cost savings in the next three to five years, once the construction of a standard gauge railway - one of the most important vision 2030 projects is completed.

The scheduled construction of the Sh1.2 trillion standard gauge railway projects will herald a major economic transformation arising from an expected slashing of commodity prices.

The new railway line, which is part of Vision 2030 Flagship project to be implemented by the Kenya Railways Corporation, will typically present an opportunity for the railways operator to run freight trains with 54 double stack flat wagons carrying 216 TEUs per trip.
The objective of the new multi-billion Mombasa-Nairobi railway will stretch from the port city of Mombasa all the way to Kigali in Rwanda and Juba in South Sudan.

The standard gauge railway is the largest project to be undertaken in the country in 50 years.Project Management Todayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15733259536944712342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8968168657058643758.post-83886191859412509692011-08-06T04:27:00.000-07:002014-12-04T03:53:36.973-08:00What is Project Management?
